- Description: Find out whether the saved image is black, one app blocks capture, or your tool fails on ordinary content. Start with three fresh captures and a viewer check.

If your screenshot saves as a black image, compare three fresh captures: the desktop or Home Screen, an ordinary text window, and the app you wanted to capture. If only that app turns black, check its capture restrictions and rendering. If all three fail, compare the built-in capture tool with your current app. These results narrow the problem; they do not prove the cause.

First open the newly saved file. A dark selection overlay while you are choosing an area is not the finished screenshot. Complete the selection and inspect the result. If no image was created at all, start with the [screenshot troubleshooting guide](https://snagitpro.com/screenshot-not-working/) instead.

Do not start by turning off antivirus, changing several graphics settings or installing another capture utility. Test ordinary content that you are allowed to capture. If the app explicitly blocks capture, use an approved export or sharing option.

Checked September 5, 2026 against Apple, Microsoft, Android and TechSmith documentation. These are documented checks and diagnostic comparisons, not claims of hands-on testing on every platform. Settings and capture restrictions can differ by app, device and organization.

## Match the black area to the next check

| What turns black? | What to investigate | First comparison |
| ---------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Only a video or sensitive panel | Content restriction or that app's rendering | Capture an ordinary window with the player closed |
| One ordinary app | App rendering, capture mode or access | Compare full-screen and window captures |
| One display | Display configuration, adapter, dock or capture handling | Move the same ordinary window between displays |
| Every fresh capture | Capture tool, permissions, graphics or security policy | Compare the built-in tool on a neutral screen |
| Only one viewer looks black or very dark | File decoding, format or color handling | Open the exact same file in a second compatible viewer |

Use the table to choose a test, not to diagnose a component. A black video rectangle does not by itself establish DRM, and one affected monitor does not prove that its cable or driver is broken.

The location of the black area gives you a better starting point than the capture app's name.

## Run a control test before changing settings

1. Hide private windows and close or minimize the target app. Choose a recognizable desktop or Home Screen with visible icons, not an entirely black background.
2. Use your usual screenshot method, finish any area selection and save the image. Open the new file and note whether its content is visible.
3. Capture an ordinary text editor with a harmless note such as “capture check B”. On a phone, use a non-sensitive Settings page. Save and inspect that fresh image.
4. Return to the original target and capture it using the same tool, mode and display. Save this as a separate file.
5. Record which of the three files is black. Open the same files in a second compatible viewer before concluding that their image content is missing.

Two clear controls and a black target narrow the failure to that target or the way it is captured. They do not distinguish a restriction from a rendering fault. If the controls are black too, use the built-in Windows, Mac or phone method described below and repeat. Keep the files separate so you do not mistake an old image for a successful test.

Two clean controls and one black target point to the target. A black desktop points back to the system path.

## When protected content is supposed to be black

An app or operating system can exclude sensitive or protected content from capture. Depending on the platform and app, you may see a blocked-capture message, a blank region or no usable screenshot. Check the app’s own help before treating this as a graphics failure.

Android’s [secure-activity documentation](https://developer.android.com/security/fraud-prevention/activities?hl=en&ref=snagitpro.com) explains FLAG\_SECURE: an app can prevent its window from appearing in screenshots and on non-secure displays. Google gives banking apps and password managers as examples and documents a blank-image outcome. This is an Android mechanism, not a universal explanation for iPhone or Windows symptoms.

Apple’s [Mac screenshot instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102646?ref=snagitpro.com) explicitly say that some apps, including Apple TV, might not allow screenshots of their windows. This applies to still images, not just recordings. If a service restricts capture, use its permitted share link, export or other approved material when available; a downloadable video is not automatically an unrestricted image source.

## If one ordinary app produces a black screenshot

For ordinary content that you own or are allowed to capture, compare these four cases. Keep the window’s content unchanged and inspect each new image:

1. A full-screen capture with the operating system’s built-in tool.
2. A window capture with that same built-in tool, if it offers window mode.
3. A full-screen capture with your usual third-party app.
4. The same ordinary window on another connected display, if one is available.

If full-screen capture works but window capture fails, keep the successful image and report the failing mode to the app vendor. If only a third-party tool fails, check its permission and support instructions. If every tool fails on one target but the controls work, investigate that target’s restrictions and rendering; the comparison still does not prove which one is responsible.

Save your work, install supported updates from the app’s official source and retest after reopening it. For an ordinary game you are allowed to capture, compare its documented windowed or borderless mode if available. Record the mode before changing it, and restore it if the result is unchanged. Do not apply game or browser workarounds to defeat an explicit capture restriction.

## If the entire screenshot is black on Windows

On Windows 11, press Windows + Shift + S, choose a rectangular image capture, drag over the harmless test note and release. Inspect the new image in Snipping Tool; save it and reopen the file. If the editor does not appear, open Paint, paste with Ctrl + V and check for the current note. Microsoft’s [Snipping Tool guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/use-snipping-tool-to-capture-screenshots?ref=snagitpro.com) covers image capture and saving. A visible toolbar alone is not a completed test.

If the built-in test works but your other tool stays black, investigate that tool before changing system drivers. If both fail on the same neutral desktop, save your work, restart Windows and repeat. For an app that freezes or cannot finish the selection, follow the [Snipping Tool repair checks](https://snagitpro.com/snipping-tool-not-working/).

If the monitor itself goes black outside capture, Microsoft’s [blank-display troubleshooting](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/display-graphics/troubleshooting-blank-screens-in-windows?ref=snagitpro.com) is the relevant route. Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B resets the graphics driver and may produce a beep or flicker; it is not a guaranteed fix for a black saved file. For persistent capture faults, use [Windows Update or the device manufacturer for drivers](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/update-drivers-through-device-manager-in-windows-ec62f46c-ff14-c91d-eead-d7126dc1f7b6?ref=snagitpro.com). Do not install generic driver-fixer software or disable endpoint protection.

![System-path tests for an entirely black screenshot using built-in capture, desktop, one display, and a controlled retest](https://storage.ghost.io/c/32/ae/32ae67dc-03a1-4a24-abcb-b731d79fd904/content/images/2026/09/black-screenshot-system-path.webp)

Keep the target area constant while you compare the tool, neutral screen, and display path.

## If a third-party capture app is black on Mac

Make a separate built-in still screenshot first: press Shift + Command + 4, drag over an ordinary text window and release. Open the new saved image. If that works but a third-party app fails, check Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. A toolbar opened with Shift + Command + 5 still requires you to choose a capture mode and finish the capture.

Apple’s [screen and audio recording access guide](https://support.apple.com/en-asia/guide/mac-help/mchld6aa7d23/mac?ref=snagitpro.com) explains how to allow an app and add it to the list. Grant screen access only to the trusted capture app you intend to use. If macOS asks you to quit and reopen it, save any work first, follow the prompt and retest the same ordinary window. Labels can differ on older macOS releases.

A successful built-in capture is a comparison, not proof that permission is the only third-party problem. If the setting is managed or unavailable, ask IT. Do not reset every privacy permission or remove a management profile. Giving an app screen access does not override restrictions imposed by protected content.

![Mac third-party screen capture permission and managed-device decision path](https://storage.ghost.io/c/32/ae/32ae67dc-03a1-4a24-abcb-b731d79fd904/content/images/2026/09/black-screenshot-permission.webp)

Allow screen access only for a trusted capture app. Ask IT when the control is managed.

## If one monitor is black but another captures

Move the same ordinary text window between the displays and capture each display with the same tool. Record whether only the window, one whole display or the complete output becomes black. Also compare the built-in tool. This helps separate a display-dependent symptom from a problem that follows the app.

If the issue follows a dock or adapter, record its model and your display settings before testing a simpler connection supported by the computer and monitor. Save your work and safely eject any storage attached through the dock before disconnecting it. Keep necessary power connected. Retest ordinary content, then restore the original setup if nothing changes. On a managed workstation, ask IT before changing drivers or display configuration.

## Black screenshots on Android and iPhone

On Android, try the phone’s built-in screenshot method on the Home Screen and a non-sensitive Settings page. [Google’s instructions](https://support.google.com/android/answer/9075928?hl=en&ref=snagitpro.com) start with Power + Volume Down; use the manufacturer’s documented method if that combination does not work. Open the fresh images in Photos or Gallery. If those are clear but one app is blank, check that app’s rules; FLAG\_SECURE is one possible reason.

On iPhone, quickly press and release Side + Volume Up for Face ID models, or Home + Side/Top for the relevant Touch ID model. [Apple’s iPhone guide](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102616?ref=snagitpro.com) shows the three button layouts and saving options. Save the capture and open it in Photos. A clear Home Screen image confirms that this particular capture and save succeeded, not that every app allows screenshots.

If only the target fails, use its support or approved sharing options rather than resetting the phone. If fresh Home Screen and Settings captures are black too, save your work, restart and check supported system updates. If the fault persists, contact the device maker with the comparison. Do not erase the phone or clear system-app data as a first troubleshooting step.

## Do not confuse black with dark, gray, or washed out

A nearly black image with visible detail is a different symptom from a missing or blank region. First confirm that you are opening the saved image, not looking at the dimmed selection overlay. Then compare the exact same file in two compatible viewers. Keep private screenshots on your own device; you do not need to upload them to a converter.

If one viewer displays the file correctly, investigate format and color handling before changing capture settings. Apple documents SDR/PNG and HDR/HEIF capture options on supported Macs with macOS Tahoe 26 or later. If you use HDR capture, press Shift + Command + 5, open Options, and choose SDR (Most Compatible). Capture the same ordinary window again and compare it with the HDR image. Do not assume every dark image is an HDR problem or that every Mac has this setting.

## Snagit-specific black captures

If the failure is specific to Snagit, use the [Snagit black-screen troubleshooting guide](https://snagitpro.com/snagit-black-screen-capture/). TechSmith’s [blank image-capture support article](https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us/articles/203731308-Snagit-Image-Captures-Are-White-Black-or-Contain-Fragments-of-Multiple-Windows?ref=snagitpro.com) discusses blocked streaming content and security products that interfere with capture. Those are documented Snagit cases, not proof that security software causes every black desktop image.

Do not copy a security-product exception or executable path from an unrelated version. Identify the exact app and protection product first, then use current vendor instructions or ask IT. A permission change should be specific to a trusted app, not a blanket reduction in protection.

## What to record before contacting support

- Device model, operating-system version and capture-app version.
- Which of the three fresh controls failed, including the viewer used to open each file.
- Whether full-screen and window capture differ.
- Monitor, dock and adapter models, and whether the capture was local or in a remote session.
- Exact error message, time of failure and whether it started after a specific update.

Send support a harmless sample that reproduces the fault, not a screenshot of private messages, account details or customer data. If the problem is that the image never appears or cannot be found, return to the [capture and saved-file checks](https://snagitpro.com/screenshot-not-working/). Those need a different investigation from a file that exists but looks black.

## Black screenshot FAQ

### Why is my screenshot black?

The app may restrict capture, or the tool, permissions, graphics, display configuration or viewer may be failing. Complete and save three fresh captures of the desktop or Home Screen, an ordinary window and the target. Compare the files in a second compatible viewer. The pattern narrows the problem but does not prove the cause.

### Why is only the video black in my screenshot?

The player may restrict capture, but a black video region alone does not prove protection is the cause. Compare an ordinary window with the player closed and check the service’s documentation. If capture is restricted, use approved sharing or export options.

### Why does screen capture show black in every app?

Compare the built-in capture tool with your current app on the same ordinary screen, and inspect fresh saved files. If only one tool fails, check its access and support instructions. If both fail, save your work, restart and investigate graphics, display configuration or management policy with the relevant vendor or IT.

### Will disabling hardware acceleration fix a black screenshot?

Changing acceleration can change how an app renders, but it is not a universal first fix. For ordinary content, follow that app vendor’s documented troubleshooting after comparing fresh captures and viewers. Do not change settings to defeat a capture restriction.

### Why is one monitor black in screenshots?

The symptom may depend on the display configuration, adapter, dock or capture method. Move the same ordinary window between displays and compare fresh full-screen captures with both tools. The result does not by itself prove that the monitor or driver is defective.

### Can Mac permissions cause a black screenshot?

A third-party capture app may need screen access under Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. Compare a completed built-in still screenshot first. Allow only the trusted app, follow any reopen prompt and retest. Permission does not override protected-content restrictions.

### Should I disable security software to fix black captures?

Do not disable protection as a generic test. First compare built-in capture, ordinary content and fresh saved files. If a specific security product is implicated, use its current documented support process or ask IT for a narrowly scoped, approved change.
