# Does Facebook Notify When You Screenshot? Messenger Is the Exception

- Description: Facebook describes no alert for posts or Stories. Messenger disappearing-message chats notify participants about detected screenshots and screen recordings.

Facebook describes no screenshot alert for posts, photos, profiles or Stories. Messenger is the important exception: in its help for disappearing messages, Meta says chat participants are notified when it detects a screenshot or screen recording of the encrypted conversation. Detection is not guaranteed. That guidance does not establish a general alert for every ordinary encrypted chat.

I read Meta’s help pages for Stories, profile views, locked profiles and encrypted Messenger chats on October 10, 2026, then reopened the current disappearing-message help on October 17\. Some guides still call the exception Vanish Mode, which Meta says is no longer supported. Here is what people can see in each part of Facebook and which settings matter if you are posting.

## What happens when you screenshot each part of Facebook

| What you capture | Is the other person told? | What Meta's pages describe |
| ------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| A post or photo | No alert described | Your audience setting decides who can see it in the first place |
| A profile | No alert described | Facebook doesn't let people track who views their profile |
| A Story | No alert described | Only the poster sees the viewer list, which shows views and reactions |
| An ordinary Messenger message, including in an encrypted chat | No general screenshot alert documented | Encryption alone is not the notification condition described by Meta |
| A disappearing message in an encrypted Messenger chat | Participants are notified if the capture is detected | Meta documents both screenshots and screen recordings in this mode; detection can miss captures |
| A screen recording | A detected recording can notify a disappearing-message chat | This is included in the current disappearing-message help, not a documented rule for all ordinary chats |

![Facebook screenshot chart: posts, photos and Stories have no described screenshot alert; a Story shows viewers; ordinary encrypted Messenger chat has no general screenshot alert; detected screenshots of disappearing messages in encrypted chats can notify participants](https://storage.ghost.io/c/32/ae/32ae67dc-03a1-4a24-abcb-b731d79fd904/content/images/2026/10/facebook-screenshot-conditions-20261017.webp)

The documented Messenger exception concerns disappearing messages in encrypted conversations. Posts, photos and Stories have no screenshot alert described in the reviewed material. Story views are a separate signal.

## Posts, photos and profiles: no screenshot alert described

The Meta help pages I reviewed do not describe a screenshot alert for ordinary feed posts, photos or profiles. That finding concerns alerts to other people; it does not establish everything the app records or transmits. None of the Meta pages I read describes an alert for it. The third-party guides agree: Social Champ's [2026 guide](https://www.socialchamp.com/blog/does-facebook-notify-screenshots/?ref=snagitpro.com) says Facebook doesn't notify users about screenshots of posts, Stories or photos, with Messenger as the exception. I'd call that consistent rather than proven, because a help center that never mentions a feature is good evidence and not a guarantee.

Profile visits are a separate worry, and Meta answers it directly. The page [Who views your Facebook profile](https://www.facebook.com/help/210896588933875) says Facebook doesn't let people track who views their profile, that third-party apps can't provide this either, and that you should report an app that claims otherwise. An app promising "who screenshotted your photos" is making a claim Facebook itself doesn't support.

## Stories: they see your view, not the screenshot

Stories are the one place where Facebook shows the poster who looked. Meta's page on [seeing who viewed your story](https://www.facebook.com/help/1322453704471759) says you can check who viewed and reacted, and that only you can see that information. The list can put your Facebook friends first, may show Messenger connections below them if your Story privacy includes them, and for a public Story can include friends, followers and other people. Some viewers appear as "others."

So watching a Story can tell the poster you were there. Taking a screenshot of it, as far as the page describes, doesn't add anything. If you want to limit who sees your Stories at all, Meta's locked-profile page lists changing your Story privacy as one of the settings you can use.

## Messenger: the one documented exception

Meta’s current [help for disappearing messages in encrypted Messenger chats](https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/1039542879410863), reopened October 17, 2026, includes both screenshots and screen recordings in its notification rule. If Meta detects one, you and the other people in the chat are notified. It also warns that not every capture can be detected. The page concerns disappearing messages; encryption alone is not enough to establish this behavior for an ordinary message. Meta’s [default-encryption announcement](https://about.fb.com/news/2023/12/default-end-to-end-encryption-on-messenger/?ref=snagitpro.com) describes the same disappearing-message context.

Three details keep the answer honest:

- **Vanish Mode is gone.** Meta's page says Vanish Mode is no longer supported, though disappearing messages still work. A 2026 guide such as [SellerPic's](https://www.sellerpic.ai/blog/does-facebook-notify-screenshots?ref=snagitpro.com) still tells readers to turn on Vanish Mode, so check the date on anything that does.
- The disappearing-message mode matters. Meta ties the documented screenshot notification to a disappearing message in an encrypted conversation, not simply to the presence of encryption. Check the mode and any notice shown inside the chat.
- **Disappearing isn't the same as uncapturable.** The same page warns that the other person can still take or forward a screenshot or screen recording, copy the message, or photograph the screen with another device before the message disappears.

The setting itself, per Meta, works like this: open the chat, tap **Information**, then **Privacy & support**, then **Disappearing messages**, pick when messages should disappear after they've been seen, and tap **Done**. Meta says the feature is being introduced gradually and isn't available to everyone yet, and that if the other person doesn't read a message within 14 days it disappears anyway. The page also advises using disappearing messages only with people you trust, which is the most practical sentence on it.

## Locked profiles and profile picture guard

If your worry is strangers saving your photos, the lever is audience, not alerts. Meta's page on [locking your profile](https://www.facebook.com/help/196419427651178) says that when you lock it, only your Facebook friends can see your profile photos and posts, your full-size profile and cover photos, your Stories and your new posts, and that your older public posts become friends-only. It adds that the feature isn't available in every country. The page also lists profile picture guard among the other privacy tools.

You may have read that profile picture guard blocks screenshots. When TechCrunch covered the [2017 pilot](https://techcrunch.com/2017/06/21/facebook-is-testing-a-feature-to-prevent-profile-pictures-being-abused-by-other-users/?ref=snagitpro.com), it reported that the guard was meant to prevent screenshots of a profile picture, initially on Android only. The locked-profile page I read doesn't mention screenshots, so I can't tell you how it behaves today, and a photo of a screen with another device gets past any such block.

## If you're the one taking the screenshot

For anything outside Messenger's disappearing-message mode, the risk is what you do next. A capture of a post or a Story reposted with someone's name, a commenter's profile picture or a phone number still visible can cause trouble no alert would warn about. Before you share a capture of someone else's content, blur the names, faces and comments that aren't the point of the image. My guide to [blurring and redacting in Snagit](https://snagitpro.com/how-to-blur-and-redact-in-snagit/) covers the steps. If you're capturing from facebook.com on a computer, the built-in tools work as they do anywhere else, and my guides to [Snipping Tool on Windows 11](https://snagitpro.com/how-to-use-snipping-tool-windows-11/) and [taking a screenshot on a Mac](https://snagitpro.com/how-to-take-a-screenshot-on-mac/) cover the shortcuts.

The answer changes from app to app. If you're comparing, I've covered [Instagram](https://snagitpro.com/does-instagram-notify-when-you-screenshot/), [WhatsApp](https://snagitpro.com/does-whatsapp-notify-when-you-screenshot/) and [TikTok](https://snagitpro.com/does-tiktok-notify-when-you-screenshot/) separately.

## The short version

Facebook describes no screenshot alert for posts, photos, profiles or Stories; a Story can still show its viewers. Messenger’s disappearing-message help documents notifications for detected screenshots and screen recordings in encrypted chats. Do not extend that rule to every ordinary encrypted chat or assume that every capture is detected. Check the chat’s disappearing-message setting and any notice shown in your version.
