There’s one more distinction people miss, and it matters: after 90 days without reaching the activation server, TechSmith says a Business or Legacy License Subscription can use Ask Me Later and keep working until the subscription expires. An Individual subscription doesn’t behave that way, and none of this is a trick for extending an expired subscription.

How Snagit Individual works offline

An Individual subscription is sign-in based. While you’re still connected, open Snagit and sign in with the exact TechSmith account email used for the purchase — once the software validates successfully, you can use its local desktop tools for the length of the offline allowance.

1. Install a supported Snagit release on the Windows or Mac computer.
2. Connect to the internet and open Snagit.
3. Sign in with the email address that owns the Individual subscription.
4. Confirm the application is activated—not still in trial mode.
5. Make a local image capture, local save, and short video test.
6. Reconnect and allow successful validation before the 90-day period ends.

TechSmith’s current internet requirement puts hard numbers on it: the computer can be offline for a maximum of 90 days and must validate again by day 91. Each successful return online resets that lease period.

A Wi-Fi indicator alone doesn’t prove the reset happened. A VPN, filtering product, proxy, firewall, incorrect system clock, or account problem can leave the computer “online” while Snagit still can’t validate. My advice: open Snagit during the connection window and confirm it actually recognizes the active subscription.

What happens across the 90-day period

Individual on day 91

On day 91 the application requires an internet connection to confirm the subscription again. If validation succeeds, the 90-day period restarts. If it doesn’t, check the owning account and the network path — reinstalling over and over won’t help. A reinstall doesn’t turn an Individual subscription into a key-based Business entitlement, and it doesn’t make the activation service reachable.

Business or Legacy after 90 days

TechSmith’s article How Long Can I Use My Subscription Software Without Internet?, updated June 10, 2026, describes what happens here: Business or Legacy License Subscription users who haven’t connected successfully to the activation server for 90 days get a dialog, and selecting Ask Me Later allows continued use until the subscription expires.

That policy doesn’t make the software perpetual. Renewal, expiry, seat ownership, and the exact installed entitlement all still matter. If you’re the IT owner, record the subscription end date and who handles renewal — treating the prompt as an indefinite bypass will bite you at expiry.

Activate Snagit Business on an offline computer

The target computer stays offline through this whole process, but you still need a separate internet-connected device to exchange an activation certificate for a code. Move the files with a transfer method approved for your environment, and never paste a key, certificate, or activation code into a public ticket or forum.

TechSmith’s official Activate Snagit Offline page supplies parallel Windows and Mac instructions:

1. Open Snagit on the offline computer, enter the valid Business software key, and click Unlock.
2. When Snagit cannot reach the activation service, choose Offline Activation.
3. In the new dialog, click Copy or Save As to preserve the generated text certificate. Keep this dialog open.
4. Move the certificate to an internet-connected device using the organization’s approved removable-media or secure-transfer process.
5. Open the activation website linked by the Snagit dialog, paste the certificate text, and click Activate.
6. Copy the entire generated activation code and return it to the offline computer.
7. Paste the code into the still-open Snagit activation dialog and click Register.

Don’t close the activation dialog after exporting the certificate. TechSmith specifically tells you to keep it open so the returned code can be pasted into the same registration flow.

Prepare Snagit before the target goes offline

Activation is only one dependency. Build and test the complete workflow before a computer enters a restricted zone:

• download the approved installer and verify its source;
• confirm the Business key, seat owner, and subscription expiry date;
• install required capture components and operating-system permissions;
• test image capture, video capture, microphone, and system audio if those are in scope;
• download approved stamps, templates, and other assets needed locally;
• choose a local Library and export location with enough storage;
• define the approved path for activation files and finished captures crossing the boundary;
• retain the installer, deployment configuration, and support contact in the organization’s controlled repository.

A successful license registration proves nothing about whether a Mac audio component, camera permission, codec, share destination, or network folder will work later. Make the actual field task your acceptance test, not just “Snagit opens.”

What works offline—and what still needs the web

Once activation is valid, the core local workflow is what you can count on: captures, Snagit Editor, local annotations, local Library access, copy/paste, and file export. Anything that sends or retrieves data to or from a web service still needs a network path: Share Link/Screencast upload, online collaboration destinations, account management, update checks, and downloading cloud-hosted assets. Some current AI-assisted features may carry service or plan dependencies too, so don’t certify them for an isolated environment until you’ve tested the exact release and deployment configuration.

One worry I can put to rest: license validation doesn’t upload local screenshots by itself. A capture leaves the device only when the user or a configured destination sends it. Administrators should still disable or control web sharing wherever sensitive images have to stay inside the environment. The vendor’s Snagit proxy and firewall page, updated January 6, 2026, lists licensing, sign-in, updater, and asset hosts separately. It also says Snagit needs ports 443 and 80, while noting that only 443 may be required. Since that list can change, put a link to the live vendor page in the change ticket rather than copying old domains into a permanent rule.

1. Open the TechSmith account used for the purchase and confirm Snagit Individual is active.

5. On an approved device, test without a VPN or filtering layer only if organizational policy allows it.

• Transfer certificates and codes through an approved channel.
• Do not publish full software keys, certificates, codes, or account emails.
• Scan removable media according to the air-gap policy in both directions.
• Retain only the records required by procurement and security policy.
• Never bypass activation by changing the system clock, hosts file, or unverified registry values.

Fiddling with the system clock can break certificates, timestamps, synchronization, and audit evidence. And blocking licensing hosts isn’t offline activation — it’s just a manufactured validation failure. Stick with the supported Business process or an approved narrow network path.
