Blur and redaction are not the same job

Snagit groups blur, pixelation, and solid redaction inside one practical workflow, but they solve different problems. Blur softens detail. Pixelation replaces an area with larger color blocks. Smart Redact uses OCR and detection to locate likely sensitive items, then applies the mask style you choose. A solid shape removes the visible detail from the delivered raster image once the result is flattened or exported.

That distinction is the most important part of this guide. A blurred password may look unreadable at normal size while still revealing its length, spacing, and character pattern. A black box is safer only when it becomes part of the exported pixels; placing a rectangle over live text in a document or PDF can leave the original content underneath. On Windows, tool shortcuts depend on the tool’s position in the first ten toolbar slots, so a fixed number is less reliable than selecting Blur directly.

The smallest useful mask is normally better than a huge fogged rectangle because the reader still needs context. Snagit 2026 improved the review step. The 2026 release added click-to-add and click-to-remove behavior for detected text, plus right-click options such as Redact All Matches, Remove, and Edit Text. Windows 2026.3.0 also introduced an experimental Optimized OCR option and notes improved Smart Redact accuracy when it is enabled. Experimental does not mean mandatory; if your organization controls production settings, test it on representative screenshots before standardizing it.

What Smart Redact can miss

Fix Smart Redact or OCR when it stops working

If Smart Redact, Grab Text, or Edit Text suddenly does nothing, check the full Snagit build before resetting preferences or reinstalling. TechSmith says a third-party OCR license expired on May 1, 2026. The company shipped a refreshed license in Snagit 2026.1.1+, 2025.4.2+, and 2024.3.7+. Snagit 2023 and older did not receive the fix because those releases are outside engineering support.

  4. Run Smart Redact. Use it to locate common PII, then correct its results manually.
  5. Cover high-risk values. Use a Shape with a solid fill, 100% opacity, and no transparent outline over credentials and regulated data.
  6. Flatten the delivery copy. TechSmith’s current hotkey reference lists Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows and Control+Shift+T on Mac for Flatten All. Keep the editable master separate.
  7. Export as PNG. PNG preserves crisp interface text and mask edges without JPEG artifacts.
  8. Close Snagit and reopen the exported file. Inspect the actual delivery asset, not the editable canvas.
  9. Check visible context and file metadata. Search for names, numbers, URLs, capture details, and source information the recipient does not need.

The editable source and delivery file serve different purposes. An SNAGX master preserves objects so you can revise the screenshot later; a PNG is the portable flattened deliverable. Flattening is not a magic privacy button. It combines objects with the canvas, but it cannot detect information you forgot to cover. It also does not make a weak blur stronger. For a credential, apply the opaque cover first, flatten the copy, and verify the exported pixels.

Check metadata and Capture Info before you share

Visual redaction and metadata cleanup are separate checks. A normal screen capture is less likely than a camera photo to contain GPS EXIF, but imported phone photos, scanned IDs, and images opened from another app can carry timestamps, device details, location fields, XMP data, or software tags. Do not assume that opening and exporting a file in Snagit removes every metadata field.

Snagit can also add information deliberately. TechSmith’s Capture Info effect can place the timestamp, operating system, application, version, or build number directly on the image. For software documentation, the cleanest privacy fix often happens before capture.
