That overlap fools people — the two tools are solving different communication problems.

Price and feature check: This comparison was refreshed July 30, 2026 against current TechSmith and Loom pages. Snagit lists an individual subscription at $39 per year. Loom lists Starter at $0, Business at $18 per user/month, Business + AI at $24 per user/month, and Enterprise by quote. Billing and Atlassian purchase terms can change, so confirm checkout totals. This is researched product analysis, not a claim that both apps were installed and benchmarked.

The short verdict

Pick Snagit when the thing you’re shipping is an image, a PDF, a visual SOP, a help-center article, a marked-up design, or a short local video. Its capture tools, Editor, OCR, Step Capture, templates, and Library are built for work that has to stay precise — and get revised after the product UI changes.

Pick Loom when the thing you’re shipping is a link to a person talking over a screen. Loom records, uploads, transcribes, captions, and puts the video on a page where viewers can react, comment, and come back to it. Paid tiers add longer recording, higher resolution, stronger editing, team spaces, privacy controls, and analytics.

Plenty of teams need both, and that’s fine. Snagit owns the durable written procedure; Loom owns the quick walkthrough, the context, the announcement. The trap is paying for two overlapping record buttons without deciding which tool owns which output.

Screenshots and documentation

This is Snagit’s clearest win. The current Snagit feature page documents region and scrolling capture, exact dimensions, arrows, callouts, shapes, stamps, magnification, text recognition, Smart Redact, templates, themes, and editable SNAGX files. Everything lands in an editor built for explaining things — and for reopening the file when something needs revising.

Step Capture records a click sequence and turns it into a numbered guide, and Snagit 2026 can share those guides as editable presentation slides. The Library lets you find old images by date, source, tags, and recognized content. In my documentation work, that combination fits technical writing and support material far better than a video-first workspace.

Loom’s current pricing table lists 25 videos per person and unlimited screenshots on Starter. Atlassian’s support pages are not fully synchronized: the Starter FAQ still describes a combined 25-video-and-screenshot limit, while the newer storage-limit article says the cap applies to 25 videos, including archived videos, and that screenshot storage is unlimited. Integrated Starter workspaces can also have a 10-user cap. Verify the limits shown inside the actual workspace before planning around the free tier. Loom’s lighter image workflow still does not replace Snagit’s editor, reusable styles, panoramic capture, editable sources, or step-document production.

Screen recording quality and setup

Both products record the screen, camera, microphone, and system audio. TechSmith’s current feature documentation backs Snagit’s cursor highlighting, click animation, on-screen drawing, picture-in-picture controls, light trimming, clip combining, GIF creation, frame capture, and background-noise removal. Current 2026 versions can also hand a recording to Camtasia Editor when that product is available.

Loom’s recording experience is tuned to get you from “record” to “send link” fast. Its official plan table and recording-limit documentation say Starter tops out at 720p with a five-minute limit per video. Business removes the recording time limit and goes high-definition up to 4K, plus custom dimensions, do-not-disturb, drawing and mouse emphasis, blur, and broader editing.

My simple test: if the video must stay a local MP4 under your file-retention system, Snagit is the natural fit. If it should open in a browser with a transcript, comments, and viewer context, that’s Loom.

Editing and AI

Snagit’s video editor is light on purpose. It trims unwanted sections, combines clips, extracts frames, creates GIFs, and handles quick cleanup — and that’s about it. For multi-track editing, detailed audio repair, transitions, or formal course production, I hand the work to Camtasia Editor or another full video editor.

Loom Business includes basic waveform editing, trim and stitch, custom thumbnails, backgrounds, embedded links, and captions. Business + AI adds transcript-based editing and Loom AI workflows such as titles, summaries, chapters, tasks, filler-word removal, and silence removal. The current pricing page also lists video-to-text automation and meeting recaps in the AI tier.

Don’t publish AI output without reading it. A generated summary can drop a warning, a transcript can mishear a product name, and silence removal can change your pacing. For regulated or safety-sensitive instruction, treat the original recording and the approved written procedure as the source of truth — not the AI layer.

Sharing, comments, and analytics

Loom is built around a hosted viewing page. Its current plan table lists Personal, Shared, and Team Libraries, comments, reactions, transcripts, captions, and integrations with Slack, Jira, Confluence, GitHub, Gmail, Notion, and other systems. Business adds password-protected videos, default workspace privacy, engagement insights, and exportable engagement data.

That interaction layer earns its keep for design feedback, code walkthroughs, sales handoffs, onboarding, and status updates. Depending on the plan, the presenter can see whether the intended audience actually watched — and where engagement dropped.

Snagit can generate share links through TechSmith Screencast and supports comments and collections, but the current Snagit store describes unlimited images and up to 25 privately hosted Screencast videos for the base offer. TechSmith’s Screencast data and privacy FAQ explains the 25-video limit, commenting, downloads, and US storage/processing. TechSmith bundles expand the browser-video, sharing, asset, and AI layer. If collaboration is the purchase driver, compare the exact bundle with Loom rather than assuming the $39 base subscription has every hosted-video feature.

Privacy, ownership, and retention

A local capture and a hosted Loom link carry different risks. Snagit can keep images and MP4 files in whatever local or enterprise storage you’ve approved. Loom’s value comes precisely from hosting, processing, transcribing, indexing, and serving the video to viewers — which means access and retention settings have to be deliberate.

Loom’s AI documentation says OpenAI receives transcript data as text files for titles, summaries, chapters, and text documents, but does not receive video or audio content for those features. Organizations should still review Loom’s current data processing agreement, subprocessor list, AI terms, data region, deletion behavior, and Atlassian administration model before enabling AI on confidential material.

Business adds password-protected videos, default workspace privacy, and activity/content reporting. Business + AI lists advanced video privacy and, for Atlassian-managed Premium workspaces, custom retention controls. The download rules also depend on plan, role, and workspace settings. Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, account transfer, audit logging through Atlassian Guard, and additional administration. Do not infer that an enterprise control exists on Starter.

With Snagit, local storage moves the burden onto your organization — the files are only as safe as you make them. Protect the Snagit Library and backups, restrict project folders, and strip sensitive information before anything gets shared.

Pricing is not an apples-to-apples comparison

Snagit’s public individual price is $39 per year, and that buys the desktop capture and editing workflow. TechSmith also sells Connect and Pro bundles with broader Screencast and asset/AI features; teams should ask for current volume pricing.

Loom Starter is free with five-minute recordings and up to 720p. Its public pricing page currently lists 25 videos per person and unlimited screenshots. Atlassian support confirms a 10-user cap for integrated Starter workspaces and a 25-video cap, but one FAQ still uses older combined video-and-screenshot wording. Treat the workspace plan screen as authoritative for the account. Loom Business is listed at $18 per user/month with unlimited videos and recording time, up to 4K, basic editing, uploads/downloads, password protection, and team features. Business + AI is $24 per user/month and adds the deeper AI and editing layer.

Loom says monthly billing is available and annual billing saves 17%; purchases through Loom.com and Atlassian.com can use different annual billing models. Record whether the displayed price is monthly or an annualized monthly rate, plus taxes and member rules, before comparing totals.

At the displayed month-to-month list prices, a 12-month arithmetic scenario is $216 per Loom Business creator and $288 per Business + AI creator, before tax or discounts. That is not a quote: annual billing can reduce the effective amount, and Atlassian.com may bill by the closest user tier while Loom.com bills by distinct paid users. Snagit’s public individual comparison figure is $39 per year; business-transfer rights and team administration require the appropriate TechSmith offer.

The real cost question is output volume. For one writer producing hundreds of maintained images, Snagit is cheap. Loom can be worth far more per seat when it replaces recurring meetings and gives viewers transcripts and comments. Buying Loom for employees who never publish a video is a much harder sell.

Choose by communication job

Choose Snagit for:

• help-center screenshots and knowledge-base articles;
• annotated bug reports and UI feedback;
• step-by-step SOPs and printable guides;
• editable local source files and controlled exports;
• short screen recordings that do not need a hosted collaboration page.

Choose Loom for:

• asynchronous updates that replace a meeting;
• personal screen-and-camera messages;
• viewer comments, reactions, transcripts, and watch insights;
• team video spaces and integrations with work systems;
• AI summaries, chapters, tasks, and transcript editing on the appropriate tier.

Use both for:

• a durable SOP plus a short “what changed” walkthrough;
• a support article plus a personal response to a difficult case;
• release documentation plus an asynchronous team announcement;
• a static checklist that remains usable after the hosted video is archived.

Before replacing one with the other

Run a two-week pilot with representative users — not just the person who requested the tool. Measure time to create, review, publish, update, find, and delete content. Test captions, screen/audio permission, protected applications, export quality, mobile viewing, retention, and account offboarding.

Put the same two communication jobs through both workflows: one procedure that will change next month, and one nuanced update that needs tone and audience feedback. For each, record:

• creator time from blank screen to approved output;
• reviewer time and number of clarification cycles;
• whether a new employee can find the item a week later;
• time to update one changed UI step or corrected statement;
• ability to export, archive, delete, and prove deletion;
• what happens when the creator leaves the organization.

Don’t convert durable procedures into video only — video is miserable to scan and update when one button changes. But don’t force every nuanced update into static screenshots either. A 90-second narrated explanation can carry tone and context that a screenshot never will.
